What is a Single Tooth Dental Implant?

A dental implant to replace a single missing tooth is a type of restorative dental treatment available in NYC. A single tooth dental implant uses a biocompatible titanium screw that is surgically inserted in the jawbone. This screw serves as a replacement tooth root. The screw is topped with a small abutment, which affixes the artificial tooth to the implanted screw.

Benefits of a Single Tooth Implant

Single tooth dental implants fill gaps in your smile. In the process of correcting the appearance of your smile, they also provide many functional and oral health benefits such as:

  • Reducing a sunken appearance around the mouth due to a deteriorating jaw
  • Preventing your jawbone from receding
  • Providing stability to nearby teeth
  • Preventing nearby teeth from shifting into the gap
  • Reducing risk of gum disease due to bacteria accumulation in the empty socket
  • Improving speech problems
  • Restoring our chewing capacity and bit force
  • Reducing insecurity, and improving self-confidence

Dental implants are regarded as the best restorative treatment for missing teeth because they prevent the loss of bone. They are also the most durable restoration, lasting decades. They frequently last a lifetime in patients who practice excellent brushing and flossing habits and see the dentist regularly for exams and cleanings.

Dental implants are also cavity-resistant and are not prone to staining. They are custom designed to match your other teeth in color, shape, and size.

Is a Dental Implant Right for Me?

Most people who are only missing one tooth will be eligible to receive dental implants. When you’re only missing a single tooth the likelihood that the bone has receded too far to support a dental implant is reduced. This is especially true if you’ve recently lost a tooth or undergone tooth extraction.

Other patients who need more than one implant due to missing teeth in different areas of the mouth may require a procedure called bone grafting. If you require bone grafting, our periodontist will place a small piece of bone or synthetic material beneath the gums to reverse bone loss and support the dental implants.

In addition to having sufficient jaw bone to support the dental implant, you will also need to be free of active gum disease, to be approved for a dental implant.
